To Our Lighthouse Challenge Friends:
We were faced with the difficult decision this year of whether or not to cancel the 2020 Lighthouse Challenge. Instead, we decided to get creative and now we’re asking you to do the same. Through the month of October, you will be able to do the Lighthouse Challenge virtually. Just click on the “Challenge Sites” tab on our homepage. You will find all of the sites have a short history or description of that site as well as a video tour. After you learn a little about the site and take the tour, you will find a downloadable picture of that site to color – a great activity for kids. Here’s where it’s your turn to get creative. You can assemble your art work into a book or make a collage or whatever project you can think of. When you are done, please post it to our Facebook page, Lighthouse Challenge of NJ, so everyone can admire your creativity. If you would like to visit the sites, even though most are not open, and do a drive-by Challenge, you are welcome to do that also, take pictures and create a montage or assemble your photos and post them to Facebook. If you complete the Challenge by visiting all the sites, either by taking the virtual tour or driving by and taking photos, you can download the completion sticker. It’s all on the honor system – we will not be checking on you.
Lighthouses that are currently open are Absecon Lighthouse, Cape May Lighthouse and East Point Lighthouse. Grounds are open at Sandy Hook, Navesink Twin Lights and Tuckerton Seaport. They are only open their regular days and hours, not the Challenge hours, so please check their websites when planning on visiting. We encourage you to visit them when convenient for you rather than on the Challenge weekend so we can avoid crowds and long lines waiting to climb as all have restrictions on how many people are allowed in the lighthouse at one time.
The actual weekend of the Challenge, October 17th & 18th, the above sites as well as Sea Girt Lighthouse and Finns Point Light/NJ Lighthouse Society will be open, grounds only. Most sites will have 2020 Lighthouse Challenge t-shirts available for purchase.
And finally, the lighthouses, lifesaving stations and museum that are part of the Lighthouse Challenge depend on your donations every year to help maintain their sites. Even though you may not be able to complete the Challenge in person, we are asking you out of the goodness of your heart to make a donation. If you were actually taking the Challenge and paid for your souvenir and the fees to climb at the various lighthouses, it would total $31, not to mention gas, food and tolls. We understand these are difficult times financially for many people, so we sincerely appreciate any donations. All of the funds collected will go directly to the 15 sites on the Challenge.
